The Indian diagnostic industry comprises of over 60,000 laboratories and 6000 diagnostic centers. Out of these, 70 per cent labs cater to pathology services and around 30 per cent cater to radiology and imaging services. As per estimates, the Indian diagnostic market is expected to grow from $ 5 Billion in 2012 to $ 32 billion from 2012-2022, at a CAGR growth rate of 20 %.

There is a huge demand for well trained Medical Laboratory Professionals in these corporate owned diagnostic lab chains and those laboratories located in private / corporate hospitals.

Description

Medical Laboratory Technology is an Allied Health specialty concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases through the use of clinical laboratory tests. Though the Medical Lab technologists spend less time with patients than doctors and nurses, medical laboratory professionals are just as dedicated to patient's health. As vital members of the health care team, medical laboratory professionals play a critical role in collecting the information needed to give the best care to an ill or injured patient. The fact is that the practice of modern medicine would be impossible without the tests performed in the laboratory.

Medical laboratory professionals have unlimited choices of practice settings. Hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, public health facilities, and commercial laboratories all have positions open right now for qualified laboratory professionals. In these settings, communication and research skills are highly valued. Employment of clinical laboratory workers is expected to grow as the volume of laboratory tests increases with population growth and the development of new types of tests.

A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Lab Technology will give the candidate a jump-start with job profiles such as Lab Technologist, Lab Analyzer, Lab Supervisor and Lab Manager. Graduates can also get placed as scientific officer & quality assurance officer in laboratories.

Successful candidate can set-up their own establishments. Students with an instinct to learn can do higher studies in specialized field of study and can progress as scientists and even can enjoy faculty positions in academic institutions.

Curriculum

The curriculum covers instruction in Human Physiology, Microbiology, Fundamentals of Haematology, Cytology & Cytotechniques, Cytogenetics & Tissue Culture.

Course Duration

3 years + 1 year of Internship

Eligibility

Pass in + 2 with 50 % minimum marks in Physics, Chemistry & Biology.

Selection Procedure

Applicants will be short-listed and successful candidates invited for a personal interview. Selection of candidates will be based on +2 marks and performance in the personal interview.
